Hengyang is of a long religious history. Hengshan
Mountain, characteristic of Buddhists and Taoists living
in the same mountain and sharing the same temple, is worth
special mention. This religious characteristic holds a very
important position in Chinese religious history and is a
much-hold story both at home and abroad. The majestic Nanyue
(an alias of Hengshan) Temple is the most important one
in the south of the lower reaches of Changjiang River and
Zhushen Temple one of the temples of longest Buddhism history.
Fuyan Temple is considered as an aged temple dated back
to the six dynasties of Eastern Jin, Wu, Song, Qi, Liang
and Chen and inherited from the seventh-generation Buddhist
descendant Huairang. Nantai Temple is looked upon as the
ancestor's Temple Caodong school by the Japanese Buddhists.
Hengshan Mountain, as the birthplace of southern school
of Buddhism, has gained a widespread reputation in Japan,
South-East Asia, and the other parts of the world for the
flourish of the five branches of this school.
